ABOUT IDENTITY THEORY
Thirty-eight years ago, I had a profound inner experience that allowed me to observe, for the briefest moment, the ongoing process of creation and evolution. Since then, I have focused persistently on unraveling the mystery I encountered that day. I carry an ongoing, inner compulsion to delve, organize, and define the depth and breadth of what I experienced—to deconstruct it, if you will—so as to reconstruct it into the relatively straightforward process I witnessed that day.
At the core of this experience, I encountered the lever that controls the mechanics of creation and evolution, which is identity. In The Craft of Life, I write: “Identity is the unseen, organizing principle that imparts form to all that we experience. It is like the die in an extrusion process, such as a cookie press. The amorphous dough represents the energy that animates life; the die (the cookie shape) at the end of the press is our personal identity. As the amorphous dough passes through, it becomes the form of the die at the end of the press. In this way, some of us become stars, others half-moons, others hearts, all arising from the same formless dough. It is identity’s function to impart form by acting as the die for the energy that animates life. Change the die, even slightly, adjust one tip of the star or one edge of the half moon, and the cookie’s shape will be different, must be different. Change your identity even slightly and your life and relationships, which are the outward expression of your identity, similarly will transform. They have no choice, for all life must obey the law of identity.
Yet, if a shift in identity spontaneously brings about true personal transformation, the question becomes, what must we do to change our identity?” The answer to this crucial question may be found in the theory and practice carefully laid out in The Craft of Life.
Identity theory is a re-envisioning of the basis for modern knowledge and scientific practice, including psychology, sociology, physics, medicine, genetics, epigenetics, economics, religion, as well as providing a new basis for self-knowledge and the structure for interrelationships between people, partners, and families. I believe what I experienced that day is the ultimate crucial component, providing access to a quantum leap in consciousness that could potentially hasten the evolution of our species toward something better than our current selves. I realize these statements may sound grandiose, perhaps preposterous, but I cannot help what I experienced; I can only bear witness to it. The essence of this profound shift in perception may be found in my blog: Living Life From The Inside Out.
Identity theory is a theoretical model, outlining how and why life changes. It is a method of inner work designed for the individual, because that is the logical starting point. This proceeds into couple’s work, which proceeds into parenting work, which proceeds into family work. In this way, we learn about and experience the same forces that control the cosmos, only we experience them in our own lives. Long after I am gone, I hope identity theory and its practice takes root and grows, so it spreads, group by group, person by person, until it becomes part of the fabric of the world’s belief system.
